Finding the right contraception shouldn't be a frustrating process. Your birth control should quietly and seamlessly support your life, giving you control over your reproductive timeline while supporting your day-to-day well-being.
At MomDoc, our goal is to partner with you to find the method that aligns with your health history, your daily routine, and your future family planning goals.
Finding Your Ideal Fit
Your body is unique, and a birth control method that works perfectly for a friend might not be the best choice for you. During a contraception consultation, your MomDoc provider will take the time to listen to your experiences and preferences. We discuss:
- Your Daily Routine: If taking a pill at the exact same time every day is difficult with your schedule, a daily oral contraceptive might cause unnecessary stress. We can explore longer-acting options.
- Side Effects and Wellness: If your current method causes unwanted side effects, let us know. There are many different formulations and delivery methods available, and we can help you find one that agrees with your body chemistry.
- Period Management: Did you know you don't biologically need to have a period every month if you aren't trying to get pregnant? We can utilize methods like hormonal IUDs or continuous birth control pills to safely manage and reduce heavy bleeding or painful cramps.
Understanding Your Options
Modern contraception offers a variety of highly effective options. Here is a breakdown of the major categories we offer and manage:
Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)
These are "Set It and Forget It" methods. They are the most effective reversible methods available (over 99% efficacy) and require no daily or monthly action on your part.
- Hormonal IUDs (Mirena, Liletta, Kyleena, Skyla): Tiny T-shaped devices placed inside the uterus, lasting 3 to 8 years depending on the brand. They release a highly localized, low dose of progestin, which often makes periods lighter or stops them entirely.
- The Copper IUD (Paragard): An excellent option if you prefer a hormone-free method. It uses copper to prevent pregnancy and is effective for up to 10 years.
- The Implant (Nexplanon): A flexible rod the size of a matchstick placed just under the skin of your upper arm, providing continuous protection for up to 5 years.
Hormonal Methods (Short-Acting)
These methods require your active, scheduled participation but offer incredible flexibility if you want to dial in an exact hormonal balance.
- The Pill (Oral Contraceptives): Taken daily. Available in combination (estrogen and progestin) or progestin-only formulations to match your health needs.
- The Vaginal Ring (NuvaRing, Annovera): A flexible ring you insert vaginally yourself. It releases continuous hormones and is replaced monthly (or yearly, for Annovera).
- The Patch (Xulane, Twirla): Applied to the skin weekly for three weeks per cycle.
- The Shot (Depo-Provera): An intramuscular injection administered in our office every three months.
Barrier, Natural, & Permanent Options
- Barrier Methods: Condoms (the only method that protects against sexually transmitted infections) and Diaphragms.
- Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FABM): Tracking your cycle biomarkers to identify your fertile window.
- Permanent Sterilization: If you are certain your family is complete, we offer counseling and surgical procedures for tubal ligation or removal (salpingectomy).
Comfortable, Compassionate Care
We know that some women may feel anxious about procedures like IUD insertions. MomDoc prioritizes your comfort. We are fully aligned with ACOG's 2025 guidelines on pain management. If you choose an IUD or implant, we explicitly offer local anesthetics (like cervical lidocaine blocks), along with guidance and reassurance every step of the way, so you feel safe and comfortable during your visit.
Appointment Types We Offer
Whether in-office or via a virtual visit, contraception care at MomDoc is comprehensive:
- Consultations: Detailed reviews of your birth control options and future family planning.
- In-Office Procedures: Pain-managed IUD and Nexplanon insertion and removal.
- Ongoing Management: Prescription refills, advice on side effects, and Depo-Provera injection appointments.
